事件二、洛杉矶无家可归服务的“工业复合体”
2026年6月11日，美国住房与城市发展部（HUD）部长斯科特·特纳（Scott Turner）宣布立即暂停向洛杉矶无家可归者服务管理局（LAHSA）提供联邦资金。理由是该机构存在反复虚假陈述、财务管理混乱、缺乏内部控制和利益冲突防范措施。特纳公开批评其“把纳税人的钱当成自己的提款机”，并点名“无家可归工业复合体”。

From the Los Angeles Homeless Funding Scandal to Musk’s “UK Civil War” Warning: The Loss of Control and Disconnect of Western Elites

Two recent events have starkly exposed the severe disconnect between certain Western elites and reality, as well as their loss of control over public resources and social risks.
Event 1: The “Homeless Industrial Complex” in Los Angeles
On June 11, 2026, U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner announced the immediate suspension of federal funding to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). The reasons cited included repeated false statements, financial mismanagement, lack of internal controls, and inadequate safeguards against conflicts of interest. Turner publicly criticized the agency for treating taxpayer money as “its own ATM” and specifically called out the “homeless industrial complex.”
Earlier, federal prosecutors had charged Alexander Soofer, the head of a major LAHSA contractor, with fraudulently obtaining approximately $23 million in homelessness-related funds. He allegedly misappropriated at least $10 million for personal use, including a $125,000 Range Rover, private jet travel, a nearly $500,000 vacation home in Greece, and a $7 million mansion in Westwood. Funds intended to help the homeless instead ended up lining private pockets.
Meanwhile, the number of homeless people in Los Angeles has not declined under Mayor Karen Bass and has continued to rise according to recent counts. Turner has continued to speak out, directly linking these luxury expenditures to the LAHSA system and emphasizing: “This is HUD money meant for our homeless neighbors. It was wasted and even used to pay off corrupt officials.”
Event 2: Musk’s Direct Confrontation with The Economist
Around the same period, Elon Musk stated clearly during an interview with The Economist Editor-in-Chief Zanny Minton Beddoes that, under current trends, “civil war in Britain is inevitable.” The two engaged in a heated exchange on the spot.
During the interview, Beddoes directly challenged Musk: “When were you last in the UK?”
Musk replied: “A few years ago.”
Beddoes immediately countered: “I live there. I’m there the whole time. That is nonsense.” She also cited data claiming London is safer than any U.S. city, that violent crime in the UK is actually declining, and accused Musk of misleading the public into believing Europe and the UK are being “overrun with terrifying Muslim immigrants.”
Musk did not get drawn into a debate over statistics. Instead, he directly pointed out that she “lives in a cloistered existence.” He stressed the core logic: if there is a large and rapidly growing group of people whose beliefs are completely antithetical to Western values, then at some point there will inevitably be a reckoning. This is the “civil war” trend he was referring to.
On July 25, Musk reposted a breakdown video of the interview from the American conservative program The Clay & Buck Show and simply replied with the word “Yup.” The program framed Musk’s comments as an open defense of Western language and civilization, while criticizing elites for long betraying Western civilization.
The Two Events Point to the Same Reality: Elite Loss of Control and Disconnect from Reality
On the surface the two stories appear different — one involving financial corruption and failure in a U.S. local government and nonprofit system, the other a warning about immigration and values conflict in Europe. Yet the underlying logic is highly similar:
• On one side are elites who control resources and the narrative, using “data” and “correct storytelling” to maintain a surface calm;
• On the other side are the actual consequences: taxpayer money squandered, homelessness continuing to worsen, and potential social fracture risks deliberately downplayed.
Los Angeles has spent hundreds of millions in federal funds to sustain an inefficient and even corrupt service system, yet the homeless population keeps growing. Meanwhile, certain elites in Britain (and Europe) insist on denying the long-term risks of large-scale, incompatible immigration. Musk chose to state the problem directly; Turner responded by cutting off the funding. Both are challenging the inertia that elite narratives must not be questioned.
Tianwang Observation: When public resources are systematically wasted and social risks are systematically denied, so-called “progress” and “inclusivity” often become privileges for the few and burdens for the many. The loss of control among certain Western elites has already spread from fiscal scandals to warnings about the survival of civilization itself. This is not a series of isolated scandals, but a structural arrogance and dysfunction.
