How many mothers in this world do not love their daughters? How could I not love mine. I long to be with my daughter all her life. But… Let this book keep her company in my place, and let me live forever in her heart. What follows is the story of my life, told for my daughter. That life can be summed up in four Chinese characters: Ku Hai Wu Ya—a bitter sea without a shore. From here on I will tell this story about myself in the third person, as Jing.
世界上有几个妈妈不爱自己的女儿呢？我又何尝不爱。我多想陪女儿一生一世，可是……就让这本书代我陪伴她吧，让我永远活在女儿的心中！下面，我要把我的一生讲述给女儿听。我的一生可以总结为四个字——「苦海无涯」。我将用第三人称「晶」，来讲述这个关于我的故事。
Jing’s suffering began in early childhood, with violence in the home, and without the fatherly love an ordinary child receives. Next, in her youth, the second sister she loved most, Wang Shuli, was suddenly murdered. Her body was never found, and no one in the family ever saw it. To this day Jing suspects that the killer destroyed the body, and that the factory or the police may have helped. She has no proof. She knows only that her sister was gone, and the body was gone with her. Then, in young adulthood, came one emotional blow after another. At twenty-two, while doing hard labor in Korea, she developed a brain tumor. After that came three marriages to Japanese men, each worse than the last. Out of that suffering came a fierce sense of responsibility and compassion. She became a volunteer and a citizen journalist for Sixty-Four Tianwang—also called the China Tianwang Human Rights Center—then the first and only human-rights website in the Chinese Communist state. For this she was politically persecuted. At the age of thirty-eight she was imprisoned for four years and ten months, and she nearly died in prison. She escaped death more than once and was released, only to be abandoned by the third husband she had deeply trusted. She discovered that the marriage had been a fraud from the start. Worse, the daughter who had depended on her, as she had depended on her daughter, was lured away by that husband. Mother and daughter have had no contact since. The loss of her daughter broke Jing completely.
晶的苦难人生，先是经历幼年时的家暴，没能得到普通孩子应有的父爱。其次，少年时晶最喜爱的二姐王淑丽突然遇害，尸首下落不明，家里一个人也没有见到。晶至今怀疑，是凶犯毁了尸，工厂或警察也可能帮着把尸首灭了。她没有证据，只知道人没了，尸首也没了。然后是青年时接二连三的情感受挫；二十二岁在韩国做苦工时患上脑瘤；与三个日本男人的一次比一次糟糕的婚姻。苦难的人生经历激发了晶的强烈责任心和同情心，进而成为当时中共国第一家也是唯一一家人权网站（六四天网，又名中国天网人权事务中心）的义工和公民记者，也因此在中共国遭到政治迫害，三十八岁入狱四年十个月，险些丧命狱中。几次死里逃生地出狱后，又遭到她深信不疑的第三任丈夫的抛弃，发现自己的第三次婚姻从一开始就是个骗局；更不幸的是，曾经与她相依为命的女儿已被丈夫诱拐，彻底失联至今。失女之痛使晶彻底崩溃。
Leaving the Communist state became Jing’s only hope of staying alive. On the way out, an agent cheated her of her money and her body, and poisoned her. Again she escaped death. When she reached the United States, it seemed a miracle—and she found that this country, too, had already been deeply penetrated by the Chinese Communist Party. Jing held to her conscience. She went on opposing the Communist Party and seeking the truth, and she believed that a person who tells the truth would at last be allowed to stand. Only later did she learn that even here, anyone who will not trade conscience for approval may be met with delay, and with a punishment that makes no sound. She will not bow to evil, whether it wears the cloak of a system or comes with a smile.
离开中共国成为晶求生的唯一希望；在出逃路上被特务骗财骗色并下毒，再次死里逃生。奇迹般来到美国后，发现美国已经被中共渗透得十分严重。晶坚守良知，继续反共、追求真理，并相信讲真话的人终将被允许站立。她后来才明白：即便在这里，不肯拿良心去换取认可的人，同样可能遭遇拖延与无声的惩罚。她不肯向邪恶低头——无论它披着制度的外衣，还是面带微笑。
This book is written so that more people may see how a system trains ordinary people to turn their faces away—and so that some may, from this point on, refuse to look past what is happening around them.
写这本书，是为了让更多人看见一种制度如何训练普通人把脸转开——也是为了让有些人从此拒绝对身边正在发生的事视而不见。
At the start, the book was for Jing’s daughter, Murakami Mifu. After four years and ten months locked away, Jing believes that God left her one breath so she would finish this book: so the world could see how a communist tyranny treats an ordinary woman who will not kneel, and—if Heaven allows—so she might see her child again. The Jing she had been died in the hunger strike. The person still alive to write is here to finish a mission.
这本书起初就是晶写给女儿村上未不的。经过四年十个月的囚禁，晶相信是上帝为她留了一口气，是要晶写完这部书，让世人看到共产暴政是怎样对待一个不肯下跪的普通女人，并——若上天许可——再见到她的孩子。原来的那个晶，死在绝食里。活着写字的这个人，是来完成使命的。
Jing remembers the comrades who have already died in prison. She thanks those who, in the days when she could not care for herself and could not manage addition or subtraction within one hundred, fed her, washed her, and taught her to pray: Jin Xiulan, Ma Hongjiao, Li Hua, and the others who appear in these pages. She thanks Teacher Huang Qi. When she finished the first draft of this volume, he was still in prison, with more than a year left before his sentence would end. Jing does not know whether he will come out alive. His words have stayed with her: it is by resistance that one gains a place to stand.
晶怀念那些已经死在狱中的战友，感谢那些在她生活不能自理、一百以内的加减法都算不清的日子里，喂她、洗她、教她祷告的人：金秀兰、马洪娇、李华，以及出现在这些章节里的其他人。晶感谢黄琦老师。写完本卷初稿时，他仍在狱中，距刑满还剩一年多——晶不知道他能否活着出来。他的话一直跟着晶：对抗产生地位。

Wang Jing says the book is coming out now so that these things may be laid open before the great dictator. To Xi Jinping, receiving a salute on American soil, she says: Put down the butcher’s knife and submit to God. The power in your hands can do good, and it can do evil. Treasure that power. Treasure human life. Do not go on being a stumbling block on humanity’s path toward civilization. God created human beings. The Chinese are no exception. They too are under God’s care. The United States is a nation under God’s protection. If a regime calls a woman who will not kneel a criminal, what it fears is not disorder. It fears one person who is still willing to tell the truth.
