At 3:50 p.m. PDT on October 23, Eric Daugherty posted that the Trump administration is offering El Salvador full support as President Nayib Bukele sends special forces into Haiti to rescue four of his soldiers taken by gangs.

Their armored vehicle was hit with hundreds of rounds and explosives and set on fire. The four men escaped the burning vehicle but have been missing since. Officials believe they survived the attack.

On October 21, President Nayib Bukele announced a military rescue operation and issued a direct warning to the gangs in Haitian Creole: “We have already finished with the gangs in El Salvador, and we can finish with you too.” He said the men were not combat troops but aviation technicians whose main job was medical evacuations, and that they were taken while returning from buying food at a market. El Salvador has since deployed special forces—reports put the number at around 100 initially, with another 100 expected, for a total of about 200.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz addressed the UN Security Council on October 19. He confirmed the details of the ambush and stated that “by God’s grace, we believe four of the men survived.” He pledged that America stands with El Salvador and offered the full support of the U.S. government to bring the four men home. Waltz also warned the gangs that if they thought they could intimidate the coalition into retreat, they had made a terrible mistake.
