President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social at 3:33 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on November 4, urging the Senate to approve the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent. President Trump also called it the “I Don’t Want to Change My Clocks Anymore Act.”
“Too bad the Senate has not yet approved the Sunshine Protection Act,” President Trump wrote. “It’s so dark outside, so early”, adding that sunset was at 5:06 p.m. and it was dark by 5:31 p.m. — “Isn’t that ridiculous?” President Trump noted that just a few days earlier it had been sunny at the same clock time, and complained about people having to change their clocks.
President Trump said that a major push before the election could have caused certain senators to lose their races “in a landslide.” President Trump criticized the Senate for not taking up the legislation despite what the post described as repeated House action and strong bipartisan support. “We have far bigger priorities, but I will keep fighting for this!” President Trump wrote.
The House passed H.R. 139, the Sunshine Protection Act of 2025, by 308 votes to 117 on July 14, 2026. The Senate received it on July 15 and referred it to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. As of this report, Congress.gov lists that referral as the latest action; the bill has not become law. The record documents one transmission of this House-passed bill to the Senate in the current Congress, rather than the repeated transmissions described in President Trump’s post.
The proposal would end twice-yearly clock changes in areas that observe daylight saving time. Permanent daylight saving time would place winter sunrises and sunsets one hour later on the clock than standard time, without changing the actual duration of daylight. Ending clock changes and choosing which time to keep are therefore two distinct questions.
Tianwang Comment: Repeated clock changes bring avoidable inconvenience, and ending them deserves serious consideration. Those who support permanent daylight saving time can also express that preference at home by leaving non-networked household clocks on daylight saving time, provided everyone understands the one-hour difference from local official time. This is a personal household choice, not a change to legal time or daylight itself. Work, school, transport, medical visits and other appointments must still follow official local time.
