At approximately 8:30 a.m. local time on August 19, U.S. President Trump confirmed at the construction site of the new White House helipad that a trade deal had been reached with Canada, and that the 50% tariffs on Canadian goods originally scheduled to take effect that day have been paused. President Trump also emphasized that Canada will eliminate tariffs on American agricultural products, reducing them to zero.

Previously, the Trump administration viewed Canada’s policies on dairy, automobiles, and alcohol as “discriminatory” against U.S. products and planned to impose 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods starting August 19. The tariffs were originally set to take effect at midnight on August 19. Hours before the deadline (on the evening of August 18), President Trump announced on Truth Social a three-day pause, stating that the two sides had reached a deal (subject to finalization of documents). Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded that “substantial progress” had been made, though important work remained. The new deadline is approximately August 21 or 22. The agreement also mentioned the possible revival of the Keystone XL pipeline.
