Elon Musk recently said that you can tell which side is the good side and which side is the bad side by which side wishes to restrict freedom of speech. The side that restricts speech, he noted, is the side of the Hitlers, Stalins, and Mussolinis of history. They used strong censorship. A restriction on speech plus large government is fundamentally fascist. Ideas should win on the strength of their arguments, not because the other side is suppressed.
He is right. Almost all who do evil use the same method. They restrict people from speaking the truth and exposing wrongdoing. They create barriers to communication so that people become confused, cannot see the full picture, and are more easily used and controlled. Scammers operate in the same way. They isolate the target, cut off outside information, and leave the person dependent on one version of events.
The same pattern appears in private life as well. When contact between a parent and a child is deliberately cut off, the parent is left dependent on one side’s version of events, and the child grows up without direct knowledge of the other parent. Blocking information and speech is not only a tool of dictatorships and fraudsters. It is also a tool used to maintain control inside families.
Whether in politics, fraud, or family, the logic is the same. Those who fear the truth try to stop people from hearing it. Those who do not fear the truth are willing to let people hear different voices.
