Some of the reactions I’m seeing right now are honestly shocking. People are acting like the situation with Iran just suddenly appeared out of nowhere this week, and that President Trump somehow woke up one morning and decided to start a war. That tells me a lot of people simply don’t know the history.
The conflict between the United States and the Iranian regime did not start yesterday. It started in 1979 when the Islamic Revolution took over Iran and militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. From that moment forward the regime openly declared America the “Great Satan,” and the relationship between our countries fundamentally changed.
Over the decades that followed, Iran and the groups it supports repeatedly targeted Americans. In 1983 a bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut killed dozens of people, including 17 Americans. The same year, a massive truck bombing destroyed the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut and killed 241 American service members. These attacks were tied to Hezbollah, a militant group created and backed by Iran’s regime. This was not an isolated moment in history. It was part of a long pattern of using proxy groups and terrorism to strike American targets and allies around the world.
The hostility never stopped. Iranian backed militias have attacked U.S. troops in the Middle East for years. In 2020 Iran even launched ballistic missiles at American bases in Iraq, injuring more than one hundred U.S. service members. This conflict has been simmering for more than four decades whether people were paying attention or not.
But there is another side to this story that people often forget. The Iranian regime is not just hostile to America. It is brutally oppressive to its own people.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known as the IRGC, operates as the regime’s enforcement arm. Protesters have been beaten, imprisoned, and in many cases killed for simply speaking out against the government. Women have been arrested and assaulted for refusing to follow strict religious rules. Entire waves of demonstrations have been crushed with violence. Millions of Iranians have lived under fear, censorship, and political repression for decades.
The world often talks about “Iran” as if the regime and the people are the same thing. They are not. The Iranian people have been victims of this regime for a very long time.
That is why something else is happening tonight that many media outlets will barely mention. Across social media there are Iranians celebrating the weakening of the regime that has ruled over them with fear for decades. Many of them are openly thanking President Trump for finally confronting a government that has oppressed their country and threatened the world for years.
At the same time Iran has been pushing toward nuclear capability. Think about that reality for a moment. A regime that chants “Death to America,” funds terrorist groups across the region, threatens our allies, and suppresses its own citizens has also been working toward the ability to build nuclear weapons.
That cannot happen.
Every president has known the Iranian regime is a problem. Democrat and Republican administrations alike tried sanctions, negotiations, containment, and diplomatic agreements while hoping the threat could somehow be managed.
But the real debate right now is not whether Iran is dangerous. History answered that question decades ago.
The debate is whether someone was finally willing to confront the problem before it reached the point of no return.
For years presidents kicked this issue down the road because confronting it carried enormous risk. President Trump is the first leader in a long time willing to stare directly at the problem and say clearly that Iran cannot be allowed to become a nuclear power.
You can debate the strategy. You can debate the timing.
But pretending this crisis suddenly appeared out of nowhere or claiming this is some brand new “forever war” ignores more than forty years of history.
Sometimes leadership means confronting a danger that others avoided because it was easier to look the other way.
History did not begin this week.
