President Trump stated that Canada has long imposed “ridiculously high tariffs” on American farmers and agricultural products, creating a roughly $60 billion trade deficit between the two countries. He said this situation is “not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE.” He announced:

For a long time, the United States has been in clearly unequal trade relationships with certain countries: the other side enjoys the enormous benefits of the American market while erecting high barriers, providing unfair subsidies, or exploiting America’s open system to acquire technology and capital—yet refusing reciprocal openness. Trump has repeatedly pointed out that this pattern of “taking advantage” cannot continue.
