The Wall Street Journal reported today that Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a three-way summit with President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next month to discuss ending the Ukraine war. The proposal would leave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky out of the meeting. According to people familiar with the discussions, Putin raised the idea during a phone call with Trump on October 9. The talks could take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit scheduled for November 18–19 in Shenzhen, China. The White House has not confirmed that Trump has agreed to the summit. A senior U.S. official said the president could be receptive given his desire to settle the war. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that discussions are underway.

President Trump posted on Truth Social at 4:36 p.m. today. He wrote that his decision on Russia is simple: he is negotiating peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine and does not want to do anything that will foolishly drive Russia away from the bargaining table. He said great progress is being made, including current hostage negotiations. Trump stated that signing a certain document at this time would drive Russia from the table, and that he can sign it later. He added that Russia is doing very little to help Iran compared with what it could be doing, and he wants to keep it that way. Trump wrote that Zelensky is using diesel refineries in Russia as a target, knowing the attacks are seriously hurting world diesel markets, including those in the United States. Farmers, ranchers, and businesses are suffering, yet Russia is still sending millions of barrels of diesel to the world at a low price. Trump said: “Zelenskyy doesn’t care, and frankly, with all of the money that Europe is famously giving him, and that Crooked Joe Biden gave him in the past, he doesn’t want to end this war, and probably never did.” He noted that Zelensky could have made a better deal two years ago, that Ukraine is in shambles, a large portion of its land is lost, and its male population is low, wounded, or dead. Trump closed: “I WANT THIS WAR END!”

Daugherty wrote that Zelensky is the main obstacle to peace and that Trump needs to find a way to end the war without him.
