Following the Heart, Not Bound by Emotion — From a Sermon on the Heart

On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Pacific Time, a pastor at Ximen Church delivered a message on the heart. He began with worshippers whose lips moved, whose songs were correct, and who took part in the whole process, yet whose hearts were far away. He then turned to Jesus’ teaching on lust in the heart, and to the twelve disciples who had followed for three years yet still did not understand what Jesus was doing, because their hearts had grown hard. He gave the example of Ananias and Sapphira lying in the middle of the Pentecost revival, showing that even amid a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit the heart can still be persuaded to deceive. He then said: only God can do the work of the heart; He does it best when a person continually places himself before Him; prayer is the main way the Holy Spirit changes the heart, sometimes only a sigh.

The message did not stop at whether outward behavior was right or wrong. It kept asking whether the heart was soft and whether it could still be led by God.

Several weeks earlier, a couple had taken the book Bitter Sea Without Shore to the pastor’s office. After listening to the message, one of them felt as if the pastor had read the book. The book tells of using the body in prison to hold what could not be yielded, and of still refusing, after coming to the United States, to wear a mask and live in muddy water. Today the pastor put almost all his strength on “the heart must be soft and must be truly before God,” not on knowledge or outward process. Whether he had read the book or not, the overlap made it clear: the real question has never been whether the lips are moving, but whether the heart is still in God’s hand.

The couple had moved from a century-old church in Seattle, where they had attended for three years, to Ximen Church. One of them had spent his whole life at that previous place. The emotional ties were heavy. They could leave together not because there was a better program outside, but because they chose to follow the heart rather than be bound by the old place. A person can worship in one church for a long time, lips singing, process correct, yet the heart can be distant or hard. Conversely, when the heart is clear about what God is doing and where one should stand, one can leave the familiar place, even a church with a hundred years of history.

This matched what the pastor said today. The disciples followed for three years and still did not understand because their hearts were hard; the couple had followed one place for three years or even a lifetime and could still move because the heart still had softness and could still be led by God. The pastor said only God can do the work of the heart; He will remove the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh. The same point can be put this way: only by taking the heart out of emotional bondage and placing it on “what God is doing” will a person not remain forever in a place that is formally correct yet inwardly distant.

God gives life not so that people only finish the process of worship. Life is in Him, and this life is the light of men. Those who believe do not remain in darkness. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Today the pastor spoke heavily of this “heart.” The couple’s move from the previous church to this one was also an action saying: they wanted a heart that could still be softened by God and could still obey, not a heart bound by emotion.
