Just before 8 p.m. Eastern Time on October 24, a shooting occurred near Bragg Stadium at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, during the school’s homecoming football game. Tallahassee police said at least 11 people were shot. Six of the victims are juveniles, the youngest only 11 years old. Three are seriously injured, one critically. One victim is a FAMU student. A twelfth person, a grandmother, was injured while fleeing. No deaths have been reported. Police said the shooting followed an altercation between two or three people and described it as an “isolated incident.” No arrests have been made. The shooter remains at large. The location was near Perry and Manatee streets, close to the stadium after the game.

The shooting took place on homecoming night, when the area around the stadium was crowded. Police have so far given no further details on the identity of the shooter or the exact nature of the dispute. Some observers note that a conflict arising at this particular time and place is not the same as an ordinary street fight. In past cases, what begins as a reported “altercation” has later been shown to involve deliberate provocation. At present, no public evidence has confirmed premeditation. The police use of “isolated incident” appears intended to contain speculation until more facts emerge.
