Wake Up America: A Cartoon at the Door and a Class That Would Not Look /

On October 31, President Trump shared a cartoon. Broken and burning doors carry the names of Norway, England, Sweden, and France. The last door still stands. It has the American flag on it. A man in a long robe holds a lit torch next to it. He stands on a mat that says “Islam.” The words above the picture are simple: “Wake up America!”

The picture does not need a long explanation. It points to what has already happened in parts of Europe—rising crime, parallel societies, and cultural pressure—and warns that the same pattern can reach the United States. The door is still standing, but the torch has already been brought to it. The only way the door opens from the inside is by electing leaders who refuse to see the problem. Eric Daugherty posted the same image with these words: “WAKE UP AMERICA. The barbarians are inside the gate and knocking on the door. The only way they get inside is by electing DEMOCRATS. Vote red to save America, it’s that simple.” The overall meaning is clear: some European countries already face serious problems. If America elects Democrats again, similar conditions can come in. The call is for Americans to wake up and vote red.

The next day, November 1, a Bible class was held in a deep-blue state. The teacher spoke on the Sermon on the Mount. The handout spent almost all its time on the personal instructions: do not resist an evil person, turn the other cheek, love your enemies, go the extra mile. It treated standing up for rights, pushing back, and protecting oneself as “questionable cultural values.” It did not ask what a follower of Jesus, or a person in authority, should do when the evil is aimed at someone else, at the weak, or at the whole community.

The words of Jesus are true. They tell a person how to answer when he himself is struck. The same Bible also says that those who govern do not carry the sword for nothing. They are God’s servants who punish the one who does wrong (Romans 13:4). When a teacher takes only the first set of words and stretches them to cover every case, the difference disappears. People leave the room less sure that it is right to stop harm when the harm is aimed at others. In a city and a state that have long chosen one political direction, this choice of emphasis arrived on the same weekend the cartoon was telling the country to look at the door.

This way of teaching is not limited to one classroom. In the past, some Chinese community classes stressed only obedience to parents and superiors while rarely mentioning the duty to tell right from wrong. Some overseas programs have highlighted “harmony” and “acceptance” while setting aside the parts of the tradition that question power. The result in each case is the same: people become slower to ask whether the thing being asked of them is just. When the same method is used with Scripture, the effect is not that the text is false. It is that only one side of the text is allowed to speak.

The cartoon and the class stood side by side for one weekend. One showed doors already broken and a torch already brought to the American door. The other, in a place that has long voted blue, chose at that moment to stress personal non-resistance while remaining silent on the duty to stop evil directed at others. Light is meant to reveal the truth, including when to forgive and when to stop evil. When only one side is taught at a time when the door is still standing, the effect is not neutrality. It is a blurring that makes people less willing to ask the question the cartoon is asking: whether the door should stay closed.

God gives life so that people may walk in clear light, not in a fog that makes the boundaries of every path hard to see. Those who believe are not meant to stay in the dark. They are also not meant to stay inside lines that have been made hard to see. The cartoon says the door is still there. By what it chose not to say, the class avoided answering the question of whether anyone should keep it closed.
