Tianwang News: Former Fauci Senior Adviser Morens Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Conceal COVID-Related Records

On August 18, David Morens, former senior adviser to Anthony Fauci, formally pleaded guilty in federal court in Maryland to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States.

Morens, 78, served as a senior adviser at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 2006 to 2022, working directly under Fauci. According to his guilty plea, during the COVID-19 pandemic he and at least two co-conspirators deliberately moved emails about coronavirus research grants to a personal Gmail account in order to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Federal Records Act requirements and conceal government records that should have been public.

The concealed communications mainly concerned an NIH grant titled “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence.” This project was linked to EcoHealth Alliance and involved research support for the Wuhan Institute of Virology. NIH later terminated the grant amid questions that the virus may have originated from the Wuhan lab. Morens and his co-conspirators used the personal email account to discuss how to respond to the grant termination, how to influence NIH to restore funding, and how to pass internal information to Fauci (referred to in court documents as a “senior NIAID official”).

In addition, Morens admitted to accepting illegal gratuities. One co-conspirator sent him two bottles of wine as thanks for his “behind-the-scenes shenanigans” and also offered to treat him to meals at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C.
此案由参议员兰德·保罗（Rand Paul）等人推动调查后移交司法部。莫伦斯最高可能面临5年监禁，量刑定于11月进行。目前，福奇本人在此案中没有被指控。
The case was referred to the Justice Department after investigations pushed by Senator Rand Paul and others. Morens faces up to five years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for November. Fauci himself has not been charged in this case.

Morens’ guilty plea once again demonstrates that senior U.S. public health officials engaged in systematic concealment and lack of transparency during the COVID-19 pandemic. While promoting harsh measures, they used private channels to cover up key information that may relate to the virus’s origin and research funding.
这再次提醒人们：权力若缺乏真正监督，即使在民主国家，也会出现掩盖真相的行为。所幸美国现在仍有司法追责的空间，相关人员至少要为自己的行为承担法律责任。
This once again reminds us that without genuine oversight, even in a democracy, those in power can cover up the truth. Fortunately, the United States still has room for legal accountability, and those involved must at least face legal consequences for their actions.
