According to reporting by the New York Times, aides with Democrat Mary Peltola’s Senate campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) were part of a months-long secret plan to recruit a man named Dan Sullivan to run against incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska.

In the summer of 2025, a staffer was instructed by top campaign officials to search Alaska voter rolls for as many people named Dan Sullivan as possible. The goal was to place another Dan Sullivan on the ballot. Under Alaska’s Ranked Choice Voting system, the resulting confusion could cost the real Senator Dan Sullivan critical votes and help Peltola.

President Trump posted on Truth Social that the Democrats’ false statements were made under oath in Federal Court, and that they therefore perjured themselves. He said Mary Peltola should suffer the legal and political consequences for what he called “a fraud on the American public,” and that Dan Sullivan should be allowed to run without either Mary Peltola or the fake Dan Sullivan on the ballot.

A lawsuit has already been filed. Democrats had previously labeled the Trump Department of Justice’s challenge to Alaska’s ballot a conspiracy theory. Ranked Choice Voting made the tactic viable.
