Elon Musk posted at 8:10 p.m. PDT tonight: “Exactly what I predicted has happened.” He was quoting a post that laid out the timeline of his own peace proposal for Ukraine and Russia. In October 2022 he laid out a path to peace and was attacked by almost everyone. In November 2023 he told Lex Fridman why he had proposed it: a lot of people dying for basically almost no changes in land, with an entire generation of young Ukrainians and Russians paying the price. Two and a half years after the original proposal, he warned that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains, and called continuing the war cruel and inhumane.

On October 3, 2022, Musk posted a four-point proposal and put it to a poll. Redo elections in the annexed regions under U.N. supervision. Russia leaves if that is the will of the people. Crimea formally part of Russia, as it has been since 1783 until Khrushchev’s mistake. Water supply to Crimea assured. Ukraine remains neutral. He followed with another poll: the will of the people who live in the Donbas and Crimea should decide whether they are part of Russia or Ukraine. He said he did not care if the proposal was unpopular. He cared that millions of people may die needlessly for an essentially identical outcome. Russia has more than three times the population of Ukraine, so victory for Ukraine is unlikely in total war. If you care about the people of Ukraine, seek peace.

The post he quoted tonight said that today the world is talking about the same kind of deal he proposed, only after hundreds of thousands more lives were thrown into a meat grinder for almost nothing. At 7:23 p.m. PDT the same night, Musk posted again: “And so the slaughter continues … Time for Zelensky to go.” He was quoting a post that said Zelensky has no intention of ending the war until Russia is defeated, and that his greatest fear is ending the war and facing a presidential election, because if he lost he would most likely be prosecuted. President Trump has said Ukraine needs a leader who will sign. The Oval Office was the first no. He has secured Russian diesel and told Ukraine to choose a leader who can make a deal. The deal being discussed now is the same kind of deal Musk put on the table in 2022: stop the killing when the land has barely moved, and do not spend another generation on a war that returns almost nothing.
