X’s Global Affairs account posted at 10:58 a.m. PDT today. People come to X to talk about what is happening in the world, including the upcoming 2026 U.S. midterms. Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and X is proud to be the global town square where these debates happen. Its job is to keep that conversation authentic, open, and safe. Through proactive sweeps and investigations, the Safety team identified and suspended more than 13,000 accounts involved in three suspected foreign influence operations linked to Iran, Russia, and China. The networks used inauthentic accounts to post and amplify content about U.S. politics. They targeted candidates and public figures across the political spectrum.

X said the measures build on the safety protections it runs 24 hours a day, year-round. Its Authenticity Policy is particularly important. Whether it is spam networks or entities engaged in influence operations, the platform is actively working to identify and stop coordinated inauthentic behavior that undermines the integrity of the platform. The Civic Integrity policy addresses misleading content that could affect participation in elections. This includes content that may confuse people about how, when, or where to participate, or that aims to discourage participation. X relies on Community Notes to add context and credible sources, alongside platform moderation. Users can report content under Civic Integrity. In critical escalations, X may apply a Civic Integrity label.

The voting booth is still there. The candidates are still on the ballot. The voters still decide. 投票亭还在。候选人还在选票上。选民还是决定的人。
Free speech is the freedom to tell the truth. It is not the freedom to run information warfare. It is not the freedom to invent accounts, amplify fake news, and mislead the public about candidates and elections. A platform that lets foreign governments steer an American election with fake accounts is not protecting free speech. It is surrendering the square.

X took the accounts down before the midterms. The candidates are still on the ballot. The voters are still the ones who decide. Clearing the fake accounts is not silencing the people. It is removing the ones who were never the people. The work continues through Election Day and beyond.
