Prosecutors in Taiwan have indicted five people for allegedly accepting $13,900 from Chinese individuals to try to “break the arms and legs” of comedian Huang Yihao, who mocks the Chinese Communist Party and President Xi Jinping.
Huang told reporters that last month he parked his scooter in an alley when a car suddenly swerved toward him, striking both the scooter and himself. He escaped severe injury but said his first thought was “could this be the CCP coming after me?” The people in the car got out, apologized, and invited him to sit in their vehicle, which he refused. Before the incident, someone had installed a tracking device in his car and monitored him in July and August.
Two other people face charges of intimidation for allegedly spreading paint and human feces outside a comedy club in Taipei where Huang performed. Huang posted: “If people are already being treated this way for criticizing the CCP even before it has come to rule Taiwan, how can we possibly expect to retain our current freedom of speech should the CCP ever gain control over Taiwan?”
Kuomintang legislative caucus convener Fu Kun-chi said no individual should ever be subjected to violent threats on account of their speech, regardless of their politics.
