Federal authorities in Boston announced the arrest of six people for allegedly running an elaborate, decade-long marriage fraud ring in Massachusetts that made millions of dollars. U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said the group arranged sham marriages so immigrants could obtain legal status, charging $38,000 to $40,000 per marriage.

Prosecutors charged the alleged ringleader, Jennifer Gonzalez, an American citizen, with conducting as many as 20 marriages. She is accused of using the profits to buy businesses and real estate in the Dominican Republic. The other five were paid to take part in the ceremonies, some of them in multiple nuptials. Charges include harboring illegal aliens and conspiracy to commit marriage fraud.
Foley said: “What an affront the alleged conduct revealed here today must be to those who play by the rules. To see a for-profit business whose sole purpose is helping people cheat and skip the line by simply paying for it must be so offensive and disheartening to those who follow our country’s laws.”
This is the latest in a series of federal actions against marriage fraud. In August, the Justice Department charged 11 people in a multimillion-dollar scheme that allegedly helped hundreds of Chinese nationals obtain green cards through sham marriages.
