The hearing began at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time in Room SD-342 of the Senate Dirksen Building and was chaired by Senator Rand Paul. It focused on the origins of COVID-19, the pandemic response, and previously released entries from Fauci’s private diary. The hearing lasted several hours.
During the hearing, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and declined to answer the vast majority of questions. Multiple media outlets reported that he refused to answer more than 100 times (some counts put the number at 111). After the hearing, Paul announced that the committee would vote next week on whether to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress. If approved, he could theoretically face up to one year in prison.
Exchanges and Data Presented at the Hearing
Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin displayed a “Drug Adverse Event Comparison” chart citing FDA and CDC data. The chart compared adverse events and reported deaths associated with ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, flu vaccines, Remdesivir, and COVID-19 vaccines. Johnson questioned why regulators appeared to downplay risks related to COVID vaccines and Remdesivir while strongly warning against ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. Other senators pressed Fauci on the diary entries, discrepancies between his earlier public statements and actual policies, and related issues. In each case, Fauci declined to answer, citing advice of counsel and his Fifth Amendment rights.
Senator Bernie Moreno delivered an emotional and forceful rebuke during the hearing, directly addressing Fauci:
“Here I am sitting in front of you six years later saying, who the f*** do you think you were for doing that?”
Moreno accused Fauci of being more concerned with his personal image and celebrity status during the pandemic than with saving American lives, and criticized Democratic senators for continuing to defend him.
President Trump Responds to Fauci’s Refusal and Issues a Statement
After the hearing, when asked why Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment, President Trump said the reason was simple: his lawyer told him to do it. Trump added that he did not know whether Fauci would have been better off not doing so, that there were many questions he could have answered, and that some he may not have felt comfortable answering, but his lawyer advised him to take that approach.
On the same day, President Trump also posted a more detailed statement on Truth Social regarding the controversies surrounding Fauci. He wrote:
“Many more people died of Covid under the Biden Administration than under the Trump Administration. ‘Operation Warp Speed’ was a SPECTACULAR SUCCESS, in fact, many say, one of the most successful things ever done by an American President. I overrode Fauci on this. His ideas were CRAZY! Also, I said from the beginning that the Virus came from the Wuhan Laboratory in China. Fauci strongly disagreed, always trying to protect China. I Inherited Fauci, who was there since the 1980’s, but with each passing day, relied less and less on him. He made too many bad calls, like on MASKS. Remember at the beginning he was an anti-masker. He then switched to a super-masker. In any event I didn’t let him shut the Country down, although he wanted to. I went the Federalist way, and let the governors decide. The Republican governors did a much better job than the Dumocrats. Fauci was largely taken out of play, and then along came Sleepy Joe Biden, who made Fauci a ‘King!’ I called Biden to tell him Fauci was no good, either didn’t have a clue, or was dishonest. The call was well received, but sadly, not acted on. Biden went on to give Fauci vast destructive power. The rest is history!”
HHS Secretary RFK Jr. Publicly Criticizes Fauci
Following the hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared on Fox News. He stated that anyone who questioned Dr. Fauci was treated like a pariah and isolated. The media repeatedly told the public to “trust the experts,” and Fauci was presented as the leading expert. Kennedy also noted that Fauci had publicly received the Moderna vaccine on national television to demonstrate its safety, yet diary entries later indicated he developed a potentially deadly blood clot in his lung—one of the primary expected serious adverse events associated with the vaccine.
Musk Highlights Timing of the Pardon
Entrepreneur Elon Musk reposted and commented on a post regarding Fauci’s pardon. The original post noted that the pardon issued by former President Biden was dated back to 2014—the same year the NIH awarded a grant to study bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Musk replied, “No kidding…,” signaling agreement with the implied questions raised by the timing.
Related Controversy: Service Members Discharged for Refusing COVID Vaccine
During the period surrounding the hearing, social media again circulated content stating that approximately 8,700 U.S. service members were involuntarily discharged from the military for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine mandate associated with Fauci’s policies. Critics have cited this figure as evidence of tangible harm resulting from those policies.
Same Day: U.S. Conducts Retaliatory Military Strikes Against Iran
On the same day as the Fauci hearing, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced military strikes against targets in Iran.
The immediate cause was an attack on July 28 (Tuesday), when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. military targets in the Middle East, including a U.S. base in Jordan. The U.S. military described it as an “attempted surprise attack” and stated that all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted.
