A Church Can Lead—or Lead Astray: If It Will Not Tell Right from Wrong, Society Pays

A church is not a private club, nor a service that exists only to comfort. It stands in the middle of a community. What it preaches and what it passes on will shape how people see sin and righteousness, truth and falsehood, duty and license. A true path leads toward reverence, repentance and order. A vague path can make people lose discernment while still speaking religious words.

The greatest danger in many churches today is not that the Bible is never mentioned, but that it is lightened. The pulpit is glad to speak of Christ’s glory, God’s love, unity and inclusion, yet unwilling at the same time to speak of sin, judgment, repentance, and the duty of a disciple. Verses are clipped and arranged under warm titles, until they become a sentence no one can easily oppose. It sounds right, and the heaviest parts of Scripture have been cut away.

For the individual this preaching is an anesthetic; for society it is a weakening. A church that will not face right and wrong will not raise a people who will. When “love” becomes a cover for problems, and “unity” a slogan that forbids questions, the flock grows confused: good and evil may mix, truth and falsehood may mix, duty may be pushed aside, and a stand may stay vague—so long as the mood remains and the sentences still sound correct.

Scripture does not split love from holiness. God’s reclaiming is never indulgence. The prophets speak of return and of discipline, of promise and of consequence. If a church treats “God still loves you” as the whole truth, people will take faith as enjoying glory, not as being called out, changed, and sent to do what is right.

Christians ought to love the church. That sentence has a condition: first see whether what is loved is the Lord’s church, and whether what is heard is the Lord’s word. Churches are true and false; pulpits are faithful and they also stray. Love does not mean switching off discernment. Treat every place that calls itself a church as an unquestionable home, and the ones hurt are usually the simplest people; what is affected is the air of a whole community.

Discernment is not mysterious. At least look at a few hard things:

  • Whether the whole word of God is preached, not merely used to decorate a theme
  • Whether God’s love is preached together with sin, repentance and duty
  • Whether Christ and the truth are the center, not an institution, an ethnic group or a fashionable slogan
  • Whether there is a boundary on great matters of right and wrong, or whether “love” and “unity” are used to cover everything

A church can be light in a community, showing the right path. It can also be fog, sending people down the wrong road inside correct words. That is why whether a church’s message is true is not a private matter. It touches families, neighbors and public life, and it touches whether a generation still dares to tell good from evil.

What is needed today is not more comfortable sentences, but a clear word about right and wrong. Without discernment there is no true faith; without distinction there is no true love.
