On the afternoon of Sunday, August 30, U.S. forces struck missile launchers on Larak Island in southern Iran. Overnight into August 31, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired ballistic missiles at two U.S. bases in Jordan. Jordan’s military said it intercepted eight incoming missiles. Early Monday morning Pacific Time, President Trump told Fox News: “We’re going to hit them hard.”

CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins confirmed a “limited, precise” strike on two Iranian launchers on Larak. The U.S. said IRGC forces were preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Larak sits on the north side of the strait, about 20 miles from the Iranian mainland. It was the first U.S. strike on an Iranian homeland target since late July.

The IRGC then announced an operation it called “Punish the Aggressor,” saying ballistic missiles and drones hit King Hussein Air Base and Al Azraq (Muwaffaq Salti) in Jordan, and claiming damage to maintenance facilities and parked U.S. aircraft. Semi-official Iranian media said the Larak strike caused Iranian military and civilian casualties; Tasnim’s initial figure was two dead and two wounded, not independently confirmed.

At 7:18 p.m. Pacific Time on August 30, President Trump posted an image on Truth Social with the words “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens.” The image was not battlefield footage. Vice President Vance later told reporters it was “a message to the Iranians,” not a confirmed attack plan.

President Trump said: “We’re going to hit them hard.” “There will be a response.” He also said sanctions were hitting Iran hard; Iran badly wanted a meeting, but he doubted whether a deal with Tehran could be trusted.

At 5:09 a.m. the same morning, President Trump posted a longer Truth Social message calling Iran a “Failed Nation” that is “DEAD”: no navy, no air force, no usable currency, soldiers and police unpaid, inflation around 300%, leadership in disarray. He also wrote that more than 100,000 protesters had been killed and that those responsible must be tried for war crimes against humanity. That death figure was stated by President Trump and was not independently sourced in the post.

Iran’s foreign minister said Monday the Larak strike violated Article 2(4) of the U.N. Charter, called on the Security Council and the Secretary-General to hold the U.S. accountable, and called the attacks on the Jordan bases “legitimate self-defense.” President Pezeshkian, speaking the same day in Kyrgyzstan, said Iran does not seek war, that continued fighting serves neither Iran nor the region, and that the way forward is dialogue and cooperation.

The exchange broke about a month of relative quiet. The U.S.–Iran war, which began in February, is now in its sixth month.
