Protest Is the Job: Duckworth and the Rocking Chairs Against an Arch for Security and Honor /

President Trump posted the picture and the question himself: “Do these people not have jobs?” Under it was Andrew Leyden’s post of 7:37 a.m. on October 1. Protesters, including Senator Tammy Duckworth, Democrat of Illinois, had gathered to oppose his proposed arch near Arlington Cemetery. They vowed to block the bulldozers by sitting in rocking chairs if construction begins.

At 5:21 a.m. on October 4 he posted again, with two photos of the same woman, one at the Reflecting Pool, one at the arch. “How much is she being paid, and by whom? She’s at all of my developments protesting. Others, likewise, are the same people. These are paid protestors, aren’t they?” The card under the words asked the same thing: same lady, paid protesters?

The arch is the one he has planned for Memorial Circle, across the Potomac from the Lincoln Memorial, at the entrance to Arlington. He set it for the nation’s 250th year: a triumphal arch about 250 feet high, to mark the anniversary, to honor the cemetery, and to stand as a piece of architecture fit for the capital. He has said it is fully financed. In September he added the use. At what he called the strong request of the military, and for national security, the arch would also be a military complex: drones stored and ready, snipers on the roof and the plaza, ammunition held there. This is a landmark for the security of the country, and for the honor and the revival of America.

Why oppose a mark for the 250th year, a salute to the cemetery, and a post that strengthens the security of the capital? The answer is in the picture. A senator came. The chairs were set before any machine arrived. The same woman stood at the Reflecting Pool and at the arch. Protest is the job, and President Trump asked the plain question: who is paying for it.
