This refusal comes after the gradual revelation of the contents of Fauci’s government-issued phone. Johnson’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations had earlier obtained a copy of the iPhone Fauci used during his tenure from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Initial examination found that the phone contained more than 34,000 text messages and 522 voicemails, spanning from approximately 2014 to a few days before Fauci left the NIH in December 2022. However, only three contacts remained in the address book; the vast majority of messages showed only phone numbers without names.

It is still too early to determine whether any of the text messages themselves were deleted.

On August 10, Johnson and Senator Rand Paul released some of the text messages. One exchange from January 2021 showed Fauci discussing the risks of COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women with then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. Fauci privately noted that the second dose of the vaccine “theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the first trimester.”

Against the backdrop of ongoing congressional efforts to hold officials accountable for pandemic-era decision-making, outside observers are questioning whether Fauci’s refusal to further cooperate—after the contact list was nearly wiped clean and key text messages began to surface—is an attempt to continue evading responsibility.
