Gunther Eagleman posted at 9:03 a.m. PDT on October 5, with a clip of about two minutes. He said France had just arrested around 5,000 people, mostly teenagers, after days of violent riots over school budget cuts. About 400 to 500 high schools shut classes. Vehicles and buildings were set on fire. Damages were already in the tens of millions. A 15-year-old reportedly lost his hand picking up a stun grenade.

The numbers on the arrests and the hand are in the French and British reports, not only in his post. Reuters said police had arrested more than 5,000 as protests spread through more than 1,200 high schools. The Guardian on October 5 said that since last Monday about 5,000 people, mostly teenagers, had been arrested, and that damage was estimated in the tens of millions of euros. The prefect of Pas-de-Calais said a 15-year-old lost his hand outside a high school in Lens when a police stun grenade blew it off. The education minister said 400 to 500 high schools were expected to stay wholly or partly closed on Monday, out of about 3,700, and that 24 schools had been burned or ransacked. He also said 78 education staff had been injured. The figure of more than 600 injured officers is the post’s. Earlier tallies put injured officers in the dozens.

The call that is on paper came from the students’ union, not from the ministry. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne, led by Ryad Rani, and the university students’ union told pupils to block the schools and take them back. Rani asked them to stay peaceful. The union then called an “act two” on October 1 and another day on October 6. The blockades began on September 17 at a high school in the Paris suburbs and spread. The grievance they named is real enough: broken buildings, crowded classes, missing teachers, and a 2027 draft that raises education spending 1.7 percent, to €65.53 billion, below inflation.

Behind that call, the accounts split. Matignon called it a maneuver organized by La France Insoumise and its far-left proxies. The education minister said far-left activists had entered the movement, taken it from the students, and been extremely violent. LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard said the government was sinking into conspiracy talk, and that the mobilization was spontaneous. Rani told Franceinfo the mobilization was by high-school students, for high-school students. Eagleman’s line that a hard-left party lit the fuse matches the government. It does not match the union.

The students are the easiest to move. A union wrote the call. The government says a hard-left party is behind it. The party says it is not. A fifteen-year-old does not sort those three. He sees a broken building, a crowded class, and people already in the street. The hand came off in Lens, on a police stun grenade he picked up. The impulse is his. The use of it is not. The injury is.
