On September 25, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth released a video of about two minutes. He told service members, their spouses, and eligible family members to register and vote in the November 3 midterms. He pointed them to the Federal Voting Assistance Program site. For those away from home: the federal postcard application. If the regular absentee ballot is late at a forward post: the federal write-in absentee ballot. Both are in statute.

To commanders and voting assistance officers he said one line that should be kept intact: you are not telling them who to vote for. You are just telling them to vote.

He cited a study of 2024: about 300,000 “warriors” were not even registered that year — more than the ballots cast in Detroit, Boston, Milwaukee, or Seattle. Write the year as 2024. Do not move the 300,000 onto a 2026 headcount that no office has published this week.

A man in uniform who can hold a rifle should be able to hold a ballot. Overseas, on a ship, on a base far from the county clerk, the easiest thing to lose is the form. Opening the federal postcard and the write-in ballot is not a coup. It is returning a right the law already wrote.

Commanders who tell a soldier which name to mark cross a line. Hegseth put the line on the tape. Keep it there. Soldiers who have kept a border, a strait, or a watch are not children. Many of them will know whom they trust with the country. That judgment belongs to them at the booth, not to a caption that assigns their party in advance.
