At 11:58 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, September 2, Elon Musk quoted Katie Miller on X and wrote that Alex Gibney “will obviously do his best to make the most convincing, nasty hit piece on me possible. He is a scumbag to the core and, in his own words, extremely biased against me.”

Miller posted earlier the same day, at 10:16 a.m. Pacific, that Gibney made 12 donations to Democrats between 2020 and 2024, including to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She cited his old posts: on April 4, 2022, that Musk taking over Twitter might be the push he needed to quit; on April 14, 2022, mocking Musk’s “free market” as neither free nor cheap; on Sept. 20, 2022, telling people to buy a Polestar instead of a Tesla — “bonus: you’re not giving money to Musk.”

Miller wrote that a director who already hates his subject cannot make a fair film. What is worth recording, she said, is the man who builds rockets, self-driving cars, robots, brain interfaces and tunnels — and who happens to be a trillionaire — not a predictable hit piece unrooted in fact.

The film, titled Musk, runs about 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours. It premieres at Venice on September 8, is due in U.S. theaters about October 16, then on HBO. When the project was announced in 2023, Gibney called it a “definitive, unvarnished look”; Musk called it “a hit piece.” Before release, The Hollywood Reporter previewed it on the cover as a portrait of a man who “may be among the most dangerous,” quoting Gibney that as Musk amassed power he “no longer wanted to constrain his worst impulses.”

Fact and stance should be kept apart. Gibney has filmed Enron, Scientology and Elizabeth Holmes, and is skilled at after-the-fact verdicts. Before this film opens, his own donations and public hostility are a conflict. If a biography that claims to be unvarnished first writes its subject as a political target who must be taken down, viewers may ask whether the camera is on a person or on a script already written.
马斯克被攻击的，往往不是他没做成的事，而是他做成的事：可重复使用火箭把发射成本打下来，星链在战区和灾区接通网络，特斯拉把电动车做成大众产品，脑机接口让瘫痪患者重新操作电脑，隧道与人形机器人仍在工程推进。这些项目有风险、有争议、有失败，也有可核对的工程进度和用户数据。把工程成就一律改写成“权力与危险”，是舆论战手法，不是科学记录。
What draws fire is often not what Musk failed to build, but what he did: reusable rockets that cut launch cost, Starlink in war zones and disaster areas, Tesla as a mass-market electric car, a brain interface that lets paralyzed patients use a computer, tunnels and humanoid robots still in engineering. The projects carry risk, dispute and failure — and also checkable schedules and user data. Recasting engineering as nothing but “power and danger” is information warfare, not a scientific record.

Tianwang’s view: Public figures may be criticized. The criticism should rest on facts that happened, not on a director picking a side and then cutting pictures. Gibney’s film has not met an audience; Hollywood press has already delivered the verdict “most dangerous.” That itself shows a political warmup, not a four-year-late fair biography. Whether Musk is flawless, and whether he is advancing technologies that can be checked, are two questions. The first can be argued. The second should not be erased by a poster.
