At about 9:59 a.m. Pacific Time on September 22, Fox News posted video of a smuggling boat stopped off Florida. CBP had confirmed the catch to Fox: a 27-foot cabin boat near Angelfish Creek, Key Largo. On board: 22 people entering illegally, 13 of them Chinese nationals, plus a suspected Cuban smuggler.

The official CBP release, dated September 21, gives the same count and the date the plane first saw the boat: September 15. An Air and Marine Operations aircraft on an Operation Vigilant Sentry patrol spotted the target. Miami and Key Largo marine units worked with the Coast Guard. The stop was without a fight. Those taken: one suspected smuggler (Cuban national), eight Ecuadorians, 13 Chinese, one Dominican. They were moved to cutter Pablo Valent for processing. The boat was seized.

A federal complaint reported by the Miami Herald adds the track: late on September 15 the boat left the Bahamas side, from Bimini; about 1:30 a.m. the next morning it was stopped roughly a mile off North Key Largo. The operator named in that complaint is a 30-year-old Cuban national with no authorization to be in the United States. Three men were charged. CBP said the passengers would be processed for removal.

Fox sources called the route rare for Chinese nationals. Caribbean sea runs have usually carried Haitians, Cubans and Dominicans. During the prior administration, Chinese arrivals more often used land corridors in California and Texas. Those corridors are tighter now. The sea lane is what showed up on the radar.

A 27-foot boat is not an asylum office. Thirteen Chinese passports on a Caribbean smuggling run means the land door was no longer the cheap door, so the traffic tried the water. That is not a mystery about “tourism.” It is a market answering enforcement. Cut the land route and do not leave the sea route for tomorrow. The same day the president told the United Nations he has no interest in letting dangers grow another day. A coastline that only watches the desert is a coastline half-watched.
