At about 2:19 p.m. Pacific Time on September 23, reporter Nick Sortor posted video from Joint Base Andrews: a squadron of U.S. fighters already on the apron where Xi Jinping’s plane was about to park. At about 2:20 p.m., Gunther Eagleman forwarded it under the line “peace through strength on the tarmac.” At about 3:02 p.m., Eric Daugherty posted the handshake: President Trump on the tarmac with Xi. Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan stood with them. At about 3:12 p.m., Daugherty posted again: Trump walked Xi to the motorcade and waved as the car pulled away. Xi is staying in the Washington area overnight. At about 3:18 p.m., One America News posted about twelve seconds from chief White House correspondent Daniel Baldwin: as The Star-Spangled Banner played, Trump, Melania, Xi and Peng saluted together. The jet had touched down shortly before 6:00 p.m. Eastern — about 3:00 p.m. Pacific.

This is the opening of a three-day state visit — Xi’s first formal trip to Washington in eleven years. The White House schedule puts the South Lawn ceremony, the Rose Garden review, the private talks and the East Room state dinner on September 24. Tea and the National Archives are on September 25. Then they leave from Andrews. Today was arrival. Tomorrow is the main stage. Daugherty noted that high-profile guests, including Elon Musk, have been invited to tomorrow night’s dinner. That is the guest list, not the dinner itself.

Daugherty’s line, matched by Bloomberg, Axios and the New York Post: a sitting U.S. president last greeted a foreign head of state on the JBA tarmac about sixty-four years ago — John F. Kennedy and Britain’s Harold Macmillan in 1962, papal visits aside. A Chinese president formally received on that tarmac by the President of the United States has no earlier case.

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly: Xi hosted Trump in China this summer; Trump is returning the hospitality. The president, she said, will deal with anyone if it advances U.S. interests and makes a good deal for the American people.

The anthem came next. Then he walked the guest to the car. That is one sentence in four parts: the welcome is personal; the power on display is American; the song played on American ground; the visit does not end at the stairs.
