President Trump presented the medals today at the White House summit Science: A New Golden Age. He was scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m. Eastern, 10:30 a.m. PDT. By 11:45 a.m. the White House replay showed the medal already in Elon Musk’s hands, and the certificate open beside him. Lisa Su stood next to them. On the group photograph: Su, Musk, Jensen Huang, Sergey Brin, and the president. It is the first time he has presented the National Medal of Science.

The White House wrote: welcome to a new golden age of science. It said the administration had just launched the biggest set of science initiatives in decades, more than $6 billion across government, industry, academia and philanthropy. That figure is the scale of the initiatives, not the prize money on the six medals.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation went to two. Michael Dell, for personal and enterprise computing and a worldwide company. Satya Nadella, for rebuilding a critical American technology company into the cloud era and the infrastructure that trains and deploys American systems. The science medal has been given by presidents since 1963. The technology medal since 1985. President Trump’s uncle, John G. Trump, received the science medal under Reagan in 1983.

A president is known by what he rewards and what he stops. This morning the mark went to the people who build the rockets, the search, the chips and the servers. Two days ago the inspector general’s numbers were still on the table: 3.1 million visa overstays, 104,000 flagged, eight arrests, because a 2021 order said not to look. Strength is what gets built. Chaos spends the seats, the streets and the money. The people to keep are the ones who make the things. The people not to keep are the overstays and the offenders. A golden age is not a slogan on the backdrop. The medal is already in the hand. The list that was ordered not to be searched still has to be searched.
