On Sunday, October 11, a Bible study in the Seattle area matched Old Testament lines to New Testament events, one by one: the seed in Genesis, the suffering in the Psalms, the throne of David, all used to prove that it was fulfilled. When the class ended, the listeners had one more chart of correspondences. They were rarely asked: once these words have matched, how does a person stand today, how does a person walk, how does a person face what is in front of them.
This is not one class. The weight of the teacher’s work is here.
A teacher decides what the next generation makes of the past. If the teacher only asks students to remember dates, names, and which sentence matches which event, the student leaves with a timeline. They do not know how a person is supposed to live after these things happened. They do not know what use the memory has today. High-school history once made many people memorize by rote. They forgot it after the exam. The reason was not that the students were dull. The method gave them no reason the memory had to be kept. If a Bible study also stops at “it matches,” the listener will find it dull, and will feel that time and strength were spent for nothing.
A teacher also decides how the next generation faces the country’s future. A country is not made great again by constantly checking the old accounts. The border, the law, the factory, the family, the news that tells the truth — these are the work of today. If the teacher only teaches people to look back at past glory, or only to match one line of history to another, the next generation will stand on the rubble and talk, and will not carry the timber down. If the teacher makes the student see that the past is a lesson and not a dwelling, that a life is for living in the present, for doing the work in front of them, and for looking ahead, then the next generation may raise the country out of the stoppage.
The teacher’s own grasp matters most. If the instructor treats “it matches” as the main purpose, the whole class stops in history. The listener spent the time and came out standing where they began. If the instructor knows these words are markers on a road, not labels in a museum, the same verses will bring a person into today. A dull instructor does not only waste one class. He forms a group of people who do not know what comes after the remembering. That group grows up and enters schools, churches, the press, and public office. The country’s future then runs half a step behind.
America is not made great again by one president pushing the work forward alone. It is also made by the countless teachers who decide whether the next generation keeps checking the timeline, or is willing to take the plumb line in hand. The teacher’s work is therefore not a post that can be done without. What it decides is whether the next generation will spend its life in the present, and whether it will build the country back up out of the stoppage.
God gave a person life, not so that the person would only study the past. If the teacher understands this, the teacher will not only ask the student to recite the dates. The teacher will ask: after you have remembered these things, how do you intend to live today? That question, asked rightly, is what keeps the country’s future from becoming another timeline.
The same question is already in the street. On October 5, Tianwang reported that France arrested about 5,000 people, most of them minors, after school blockades turned violent. A 15-year-old in Lens lost a hand to a police stun grenade. The union wrote the call. The government said a hard-left party was behind it. The party said no. A generation that is sent to blockade a school, instead of being asked how it will live today, is the cost of a teacher who never asked the second question.
Tianwang wrote the same line on September 27. The Seattle class that day was the rebuilding of the Temple. The past was a lesson, not a dwelling. The plain appears on the day someone is willing to hold the plumb line. Today’s class asked the next question: after the matching, how does a person live. The earlier class already had the answer. Do the small thing today. Do not turn today into a footnote on yesterday.
